A Medical Sterilization Technician, also known as a Sterile Processing Technician or Sterile Processing Tech, is a key healthcare professional responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role ensures that all instruments and equipment are safe for patient use, thereby playing a crucial part in infection control and patient safety within healthcare facilities



Requirements

Theoretical, practical, and procedural knowledge of the following:

1.Mastery in decontamination, sterilization, packaging, and distribution of medical instruments and supplies.

2.Equipment Operation: Proficient in using various sterilization and cleaning equipment, including ultrasonic washer/dryer, water distiller, washer/decontamination units, steam sterilizers (hi-vac and gravity), ethylene oxide sterilizers, instrument markers, and Steris systems.

3.Sterilizer Efficiency Monitoring: Competent in performing and logging biological tests to ensure sterilizer efficiency.

4.Cold Sterilization: Skilled in cold sterilization methods and procedures.

5.Instrumentation Identification: Ability to correctly identify surgical instruments and determine appropriate sterilization methods.

6.Preparation for Sterilization: Experienced in preparing surgical instruments and goods for sterilization processes.

7.Sterilizer Load Identification: Accurately identifies and maintains records of each sterilizer load.

8.Department Cleanliness: Ensures a high standard of cleanliness within the sterile processing department.

9.Safe Handling Practices: Practices safe handling of items exposed to blood and body fluids.

10.Equipment Maintenance: Reports broken or malfunctioning equipment promptly.

11.Education and Participation: Actively participates in in-service education and departmental meetings.

12.Policy Adherence: Complies with hospital policies and procedures and Maintains strict patient confidentiality.

Qualifications  

A Certified Bachelor or Diploma Degree in Medical Sterilization or in related specialization (chemistry, microbiology, biology, biochemistry) with at least 2 years of Professional Experience in Medical Sterilization Field.
